Punctuation Rules

Punctuations are symbols that are used in order to present a sentence or a paragraph in a structured and organized manner. Punctuations are used for pauses and ends. Examples: comma (,); semi-colon (;); colon (:)’ full-stop (.) etc. Usage of punctuation marks also can change the meaning of a particular sentence and therefore, understanding punctuation is very important. For example: As I hardly get time to go for shopping, I bought baby cribs online for my daughter. While using punctuation, there are some rules that need to be followed. Let’s have a look at some of the most commonly used punctuation rules along with examples for better understanding.

Rule 1: Every sentence must end with a full-stop. For example: Maria is looking for quality seating for babies.

Rule 2: Proper nouns (name of people, places, brands etc.) should always be capitalized. For example: Hari bought good collection of kids’ bedroom furniture from Vividha brand.

Rule 3: Quotation marks are used while quoting someone’s speech like in direct speech. For example: Lina said, “I am planning to buy baby cribs online. I have heard it’s good and affordable”

Rule 4: After an introductory phrase or sentence, comma needs to be used. For example: Honestly, I don’t trust him much.

Rule 5: Independent clauses should be linked using semi-colons and not commas. For example: He often buys kids’ bedroom furniture few online baby stores have real good stuff.

Rule 6: When a punctuation mark is not a part of quote, it should be enclosed within quotation marks. For example: I believe that “Honesty is the best policy”.

Rule 7: Every question must end with a question mark. For example: Do you know where to buy seating for babies?
These are some of the most commonly used punctuation marks and its rules along with relevant examples.

Negatives and its rules in English Grammar

Negatives are the words that conveys something wrong or negation. Negative sentences are the types of sentences that convey a negative meaning or negate or deny something. For example: John has never bought any cribs for babies before. Here, never is a negative word that describes that John has not bought any cribs for babies earlier. There are rules of negation that are used in English grammar. Let’s have a look at it in this post.

Rule 1: In English grammar, in order to negate something one needs to convey the meaning through a negative sentence. This is generally done by using the word “not” after the first auxiliary verb of the sentence.  For example:
Affirmative Sentence: Jane is buying baby seating chairs for Kitty’s daughter.
Negative Sentence: Jane is not buying baby seating chairs for Kitty’s daughter.
Affirmative Sentence: I have tried buying rye pillow for newborn from online baby store.
Negative sentence: I have not tried buying rye pillow for newborn from online baby store.

Rule 2: When an auxiliary verb is used to convert an affirmative sentence to negative sentence, the main verb is not affected. For example:
Affirmative Sentence: She is a good girl.
Negative Sentence: She is not a good girl.
Affirmative Sentence: Hari is a bad person.
Negative Sentence: Hari is not a bad person.

Rule 3: When there is no auxiliary verb in the positive sentences, then an auxiliary verb needs to be added. This happens generally for present simple and past simple tenses. For example:
Affirmative Sentence: I understand French language.
Negative Sentence: I do not understand French Language.
Affirmative Sentence: She plays football.
Negative Sentence: She doesn’t play football.
Affirmative Sentence: They know the reality beneath it.
Negative Sentence: They don’t know the reality beneath it.
These are the rules of negations used in English grammar.

Combining Sentences: Coordination, Subordination and Reduction

A sentence is a group of words that conveys a complete meaning. There are different ways of combining sentences. It is one of the most common exercises that are given to student during their Basic English classes. There are three major ways of combining sentences – coordination, subordination and reduction. Let’s have a look at the same in this post along with examples.
Coordination: Coordination is one of the most common ways of adding two or more sentences. Coordination is used to combine sentences or clauses that are of equal value in a meaningful conversation. In this process, coordinating conjunctions play the role of adding the sentences. Examples of coordinating conjunctions are and, but, or, so etc. For example:
1. Owen baby cots online India collection is really good, so I am going to buy baby cots online for my child.
2. Kids’ party seating chairs are available in the local market but I prefer buying kids’ party chairs online.
Subordination: Subordination is another way of combining sentences. This process is used to combine sentences where one is an independent clause and another one is a dependent clause. In subordination, subordinating conjunctions such as who, what, when, although, if etc are used. For example:
1. Although baby cots online India collection is available in stores, I will buy them online.
2. This is the person who was making faces during the politician’s speech.
Reduction: Two or more sentences can also be combined to one using the way of reduction. Here, a sentence can be reduced to a clause or a phrase. For example:
1. Maria, pained by her daughter’s neck state, bought a neck support pillow immediately. Maria was pained by her daughter’s neck state. Maria bought a neck support pillow immediately.
2. She was happy to buy the bicycle online at best prices. She bought the bicycle online at best prices. She was happy.
These are the three major ways of combining sentences.
